Day 1 Cont: Gold Mine Discovery

On the way home from Phylis lake Nathan saw this cool Old Mine, so we all climbed up to explore.

The mine was barred off, but it didn't stop Nathan from entering and trudging through the water to check it all out. Unfortunately, and much to the disappointment of all the kids, his discoveries did NOT include any gold. Justin really wanted to stay and explore. It really was a very cool place.

Day 1 - Olsen/Neyman Campout - Phylis Lake

The day began late as we all took the chance to sleep in. Even Max slept later... a true miracle!
We took the morning to get settled in, explore, and relax. Collecting wood and building a fire early in the morning is so fun.
For breakfast we ate Laura's famous tinfoil potato dinner. She actually made this last night for dinner, but had so much left over, we ate it for breakfast, lunch, dinner, breakfast the next day.......... and on and on.
We then hiked up to Phyllis Lake... a short hike (about 1/2 mile) but mostly uphill.

It was beautiful! We ate smashed P&B sandwiches, swam, fished, explored, relaxed and simply enjoyed all the amazing and beautiful scenery.

Fishing, but catching NO fish! You can see Geoff trying to retrieve his spinner, but to no avail. Justin likes to fish, and is good at it because he is so careful and patient.

Max was totally intrigued by the lake bugs. Geoff spent a lot of time searching the water for "More bugs! More!" Tilley is trying to finish the 4th Book of the Vampire Series by Stephanie Meyer. And there's Laura, wishing she could swim in the same outfit as her little Nate.

Camping Crew

Here is our camping crew, the Neymans and the Olsens. We couldn't ask for better people to hang out with. The Olsen's are some of our favorite people, and we love spending time with them. How fun to have 3 whole days together!

Arriving at Camp - 4th of July Trail Site

Last week we invited Nathan and Laura Olsen to go camping with us. Wednesday they called and said, "Let's do it this weekend!" So we all scrambled to get everything together, and left 7:30 Thursday night to this beautiful area of Idaho just below Stanley around the 4th of July Creek Trail.

We didn't actually arrive until about midnight, and the Olsen's only beat us there by an hour. But it was enough time to set up their tent get the camp fire going for us.
The chosen camp site was next to a beautiful creek that made for the most amazing lullaby at night!

Monday Night Games

Family Night Games began with a trip to the swimming pool. Justin and me on our bikes, Max in the trailer, and Geoff on the scooter...we all raced to the pool.

Justin has been making great progress in the pool.

He especially likes it when Geoff is able to come.

This time Geoff and Justin Swam while Max and I played on the playground next to the pool. Max LOVES and prefers the playground to the pool.

We came home and Geoff surprised us by pulling our TV out of the garage and setting it up so we could watch the 2008 Olympics. We were all very excited. Especially me...I LOVE the Olympics!

Here is Geoff and Justin, in office watching Olympics and eating the cake that Justin made...chocolate vanilla swirl. It was YUMMY!

Sunday Family Night

We've decided to have the lesson portion of our Family Night on Sunday's since it's a great Sunday activity that we can really focus on and then have more time to play on Monday Night.

Tonight, Justin gave a stellar lesson about how to gain a testimony.
Before FHE began, he wrote the word testimony on a piece of paper and hid it some where in the family room. To begin his lesson, he explained that there are 5 things we need to do to gain a testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ (based on Dallin H. Oaks talk from Conference). 1. Desire to get a testimony, 2. Ask God in prayer to help you get and strengthen one, 3. ACT, 4. Share/bear it, and 5. Take the sacrament each week.

Then he asked if I wanted a testimony. I said, "yes". He said, "okay, you know what to do, and now that we know you want one, you gotta find it. I'll give you clues to find your "testimony" that I've hidden."

Eventually, as I followed his clues, I found his TESTIMONY piece of paper. He explained, "This is just like gaining a testimony of the gospel. After you decided you wanted to find a testimony, you watched for my clues which is just like listening to Heavenly Father tell you how to gain a testimony. Then you went and looked, which is just what you needed to do to ACT. It's like trying to catch a ball. (He then showed us a picture he drew to illustrate his point)
You can't just stand there, you've got to jump up and stretch your arm and catch it. You've got to DO something. If you just sat there on the floor, you would have never found the testimony."

Justin shared his sweet testimony with us and challenged us to do 3 things this week to strengthen our testimony.

These moments are so special. Justin is an amazing young man. His testimony seems to grow by leaps and bounds.

Idaho Natural History Museum

We spent NOT NEAR ENOUGH time in this museum consisting of animals and artifacts that Nathan's Father's Uncle (I think that's the relation) has mostly himself discovered, hunted, collected, etc. I saw every animal there I knew existed and a few I didn't know existed. For example...a TWO HEADED LAMB (Can you find it?).
These few pictures only give a SMALL glimpse of what we saw. The museum is extensive and simply amazing. You could easily spend days there. It was fascinating.

My favorite was an art piece (I don't have a picture, but I loved it)... the head of an Indian chief made out of arrow heads. Justin's favorite was the humongous alligator and the wild boars. Geoff especially liked the big "scary" bears and the bobcats with their eyes bulging out (I think a taxidermy blunder).

This relative of Nathan's, Richard, collects everything, so it seems. Right now he is in Africa hunting some six or seven exotic animals to add to his collection. I was sad we missed him, as Laura tells me he is so fun and has some amazing stories. We'll have to go back.

This is what you see when you drive up. Richard and family/friends have carved faces into these large lava rocks-- there were tons of them lining the road. Very creative. I loved it.

We spent most of the day with the big Olsen clan and loved it. Thanks guys! We love you.

Mammoth Cave

The morning came quickly, and after eating Laura's yummy waffles, we all loaded into Olsen's van and headed to Mammoth Cave.
We followed this path that lead to the entrance of this enormous cave. Mammoth Cave was created by lava, origianlly was a "lava tube." The lava carved out miles of the earth in a tube-like form, and now-- the lava gone, we are left with this amazing Cave to explore.

Apparently, the cave was used during the cold war. I can't image a better bomb shelter. It could easily house the Twin Falls population.

Of course since it is completely underground, we used lanterns to give us light for our little tour.

I was envious of the perfect cold room! You couldn't ask for a better place to store your food storage. I told Geoff that I want one of these under our house.

It was really very fun to see, and interesting to learn the history.

I wonder if Geoff can get a hold of a little hot lava--we could put a little underneath our lot in Hidden springs and let it carve out some caves until we're able to build. How cool would that be!

The Olsens and the Olsen Family Reunion

After the Temple open house, we went to Nathan & Laura Olsen's home for the weekend. We joined them for their extended Olsen Family Reunion on Friday night & Saturday.

As we were traveling to Jerome for the "Weeny Roast", Laura saw some guys walking over the big Twin Falls Bridge and told us to hurry and pull over. We quickly parked and ran over to where we had a good view of the guys. This is what we saw...

Wow! Laura told us people come from all over the world to jump this bridge, as it is one of the few you can jump without a permit. CRAZY! Back into the car and off to the reunion.

This was a reunion of families that for the most part hadn't ever met each other. We fit right into the plethora of people that didn't know each other. They're all great people...but what we loved was being able to spend time with Laura and Nathan and their children. What an amazing family. We LOVE spending time with them.

After returning to their home that evening, we decided to go on a little double date, and went to the theater to watch A Dark Night-- the new Batman Movie. It was exactly as the title portrayed...dark and a bit freaky! We had heard so many good recommendations for it, but I can't say I would recommend it to anyone.

Twin Falls Temple Open House

We started our weekend vacation by traveling down to Twin Falls, Idaho. Our first stop was at the LDS Temple. I LOVE going to Temple open houses with my children. I love for them to see and experience for themselves how beautiful and peaceful the temples are. The Twin Falls Temple is so beautiful. It never ceases to amaze me how strong the spirit is in and around the Temple. Max kept pointing to the pictures of Jesus saying, "Geesa". He was so cute. There is nothing that compares to the majesty, beauty and peacefulness of these places. Truly the temple is what it has inscribed at it's entrance, "Holiness to the Lord, the House of the Lord"

Justin's Celestial Kingdom

I ran into Justin's Primary Teacher in the washroom today. She told me she was very amazed with Justin last week. Her teaching partner is going back to school (moving away) and wanted to bring the kids a treat. She went around the circle and asked each child what they would want. Most responded with requests like cotton candy, candy bars, etc. When she got to Justin, he replied, "We're not really a sugar-eating family. Can I have an apple?" She told me she has a new resolve to eat better because of his example.

Justin is such a good example to us all. He is strong, and loves to do what he knows to be good and right.

Well in primary class today they were asked to draw a picture of the Celestial Kingdom. This is what Justin drew. When I asked him about it he said,
"This is what the Celestial Kingdom is going to be like...loaded with colorful and delicious candy that is made with good ingredients so you can eat anything you want whenever you like."

Saturday is a Special Day...

I love Saturday's like this! We woke up and all went for a bike ride. It was a beautiful morning, and felt so good to get out first thing. Justin lead the way and took us to Lochsa Falls Park. We stopped at Max's bidding, and played on the playground. It's so much more exciting when Geoff is with us. We played tag, and when Justin was after Geoff, we all laughed our heads off watching Geoff fake clumsiness and catastrophe as he climbed, slipped, bonked, crashed, mangled, and jammed through the playground. (Yet another memory recorded without the video camera...dang!)

After breakfast, Geoff went to the Church Cannery to help them do some dry pack, and Justin and I cleaned the house sparkling clean.

Then we went to Elijah Trent's baptism. I can't believe it will be Justin doing this just next year. He was especially interested in the baptism. Of course Max was thoroughly intrigued with the baptismal font. I sat him down next to Justin on the floor right in front of the font. We watched Elijah come down into the water with his Father. My eyes went back to Max who was then climbing the glass barrier, trying with all his might to get over into the water. A few more seconds, and he would have made it over. So much for reverence. Still, the spirit is always so strong at every baptism. I love going.

Ran a few errands, went to Settler's Park, and home early to "get ready for Sunday!"

Settler's Park

We were returning home from errands, and discovered this park--Settler's Park--only a few miles from our house. It is HUGE! There are athletic fields everywhere, an extensive playground for big and little kids, a water park, and musical instruments to play with. We can't believe we are just now discovering this!

First Family Camping Trip

We left Thursday afternoon for the mountains in Garden Valley (about 45 min North of our home in Meridian). We were ALL very excited to get away together and enjoy a little nature and outdoors. This was not only our FIRST family camping trip, but it was also our FIRST trip with "The Beast" (our Excursion) with our own homemade biodiesel fuel. It makes the trip that much more fun, when we hardly had to pay anything to go.
Here we are, setting up camp and getting situated in the absolutely most perfect spot, right next to the river in a beautiful, private little clearing. Geoff and Justin built a fire and set up the tent, while I chased Max everywhere he shouldn't go...into the river, by the fire, into the stickery bushes, etc.
We made a dutch oven dinner with potatoes, carrots, onions and hamburger. It was yummy. Then we put some peach & raspberry cobbler on the coals to cook, while we went exploring and on a little hike.
On this hike, Geoff reminded me so much of a deer...
He amazes me. It doesn't matter how difficult the terrain, how steep the hill, or how heavy the load, Geoff moves gracefully like a deer. He never slips, trips or slides. He scales a fence, tree stumps, barriers with no apparent effort. At one point, the hill was so steep going down, I was concerned about getting the kids down safely. Geoff put Justin on his shoulders and Max in his arms, and bounded down the hill without a second thought...gracefully, just like a deer. He is so strong, capable, and confident. I never have to worry when he is around. Of course, I stumbled my way down wishing there were room somewhere on the deer for me to ride too. Amazing! The trail was covered with the most beautiful wild flowers. Eventually, we ended up at a little hot springs which had been totally revamped since Geoff had been there a couple of months ago. According to Geoff, previously it had been a nice warm mud hole. Now it was this peaceful, beautiful and soothing hot spring tub. It was SO AWESOME!
The air was cool and crisp, but the hot spring was toasty warm. Geoff and I could have stayed there for a very long time!!!! Max loved it and Justin managed to get his legs in.

We headed back to camp just in time for a very delicious cobbler. It was late and Max went right to sleep. We all followed shortly there after. Max and Justin slept great, and Geoff and I suffered greatly trying to keep Max happy and comfortable and Justin warm. And of course by the time we got it figured out, it was 6am-- and Max was ready to go!

I started the morning fire with the help of a little fire fluid, and made breakfast--pancakes, eggs and orange juice. Geoff is such an organized and clean camper. He had everything we needed and knew exactly where everything was. It's easy to see that here, out in the middle of no where, Geoff is in his element. He makes it so fun for all of us.
After breakfast, we cleaned up camp, explored, threw rocks of the bridge (Max's favorite activity) and went to the Hot springs again. It felt so good to take a nice warm bath and head home clean!
On the way home we pulled over at a couple watch points along the way and watched some rafters maneuver through the rapids. This area is stunningly beautiful.

At one point, we cross the river over an older bridge. Geoff said, "Anyone want to jump off the bride?" Silence. None of us wanted to make the jump, but we ALL wanted to watch Geoff make the jump. After some negotiations with Justin, the deal was made, and here is the jump.

Never a dull moment. What a blast. We had so much fun, and are all ready talking about our next trip. WHY did we wait so long to start this great tradition?

Justin's memorable quotes for the trip were:

"Dad sure knows a lot about 'livin', doesn't he mom!!"

"Mom, you're the REAL cook in this family!"
